Halloween Kills to World Premiere in Venice; Jamie Lee Curtis to Receive Lifetime Achievement

June 30, 2021 by Sean Decker

Ahead of its theatrical release on October 15th, 2021, director David Gordon Green’s upcoming feature Halloween Kills will have its world premiere on September 8th at the 78th Venice Film Festival, according to Deadline. In addition, the festival is set to award a Gold Lion award for Lifetime Achievement to series star Jamie Lee Curtis.

Curtis said of the Lifetime Achievement, “I am incredibly humbled to be honored in this way by the Venice International Film Festival. It seems impossible to me that I’ve been in this industry long enough to be receiving ‘Lifetime Achievement’ recognition, and to have it happen now, with Halloween Kills, is particularly meaningful to me. Halloween, and my partnership with Laurie Strode, launched and sustained my career, and to have these films evolve into a new franchise that is beloved by audiences around the world was, and remains, a gift. Italian Cinema has always honored and heralded the genre that gave me my career, so I couldn’t be more proud and happy to accept this award from the Venice International Film Festival on behalf of Laurie and all the courageous heroines of the world who stand tall in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and refuse to yield.”

Venice fest director Alberto Barbera commented, “Jamie Lee Curtis belongs to that rarefied group of Hollywood actors who best reflect the qualities that are the very soul of the global film industry and its legacy. A direct descendant of America’s film aristocracy — she is the daughter of two unforgettable stars, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh — Jamie Lee Curtis is the natural embodiment of a star who knows how to play roles with versatility and amenability, all while infusing them with her peerless charisma and signature personality. All these qualities, combined with her work as an author of children’s books and her commitment to her charitable work have cemented her status as an indelible and enduring global artist. To date, her extraordinary four-decade career, which began with her dazzling debut in John Carpenter’s 1978 horror classic, Halloween, encompasses more than forty feature films and reminds us that true talent, combined with intelligence, wit, endurance and sheer grit, are the hallmarks of this true and unforgettable star.”

A direct sequel to director David Gordon Green’s global 2018 smash hit Halloween, Halloween Kills is directed by Green from a script he co-wrote with returning collaborator Danny McBride and series newcomer Scott Teems.

Returning to reprise her role of final girl “Laurie Strode” which she originated in John Carpenter’s immortal classic 1978 film Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis is joined by original cast members Nick Castle, Kyle Richards, Nancy Stephens and Charles Cyphers. Additional cast includes James Jude Courtney, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Robert Longstreet and Anthony Michael Hall.

The official Halloween Kills synopsis from Universal reads: “Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Greer), and granddaughter Allyson (Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster.”

“The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all.”

Produced by Trancas International Films, Miramax and Blumhouse Productions and based on characters created by series originators John Carpenter and Debra Hill, Halloween Kills and its follow-up Halloween Ends (the latter now set for release on October 14, 2022) will be produced by Malek Akkad, Jason Blum and Bill Block. Green, McBride, John Carpenter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jeanette Volturno, Couper Samuelson and Ryan Freimann serve as executive producers.

Further Front Publishing Launches New Illustrated Story: The Legend of Halloween, Telling the Classic 1978 Horror Story in a Reimagined Way

The illustrated story is written by David Gordon Green and Onur Tukel, based on the original Halloween screenplay by John Carpenter and Debra Hill

LOS ANGELES (January 26, 2021) Further Front Publishing releases the illustrated story The Legend of Halloween, based on the original motion picture screenplay of Halloween (1978) from John Carpenter and Debra Hill. The new illustrated story is co-written by filmmaker David Gordon Green, who directed the 2018 Halloween sequel as well as the upcoming films Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, and Author/Director Onur Tukel (Applesauce, Richard’s Wedding) who also illustrated the book, while Malek Akkad and Ryan Freimann, producer and executive producer of the 2018 Halloween film and forthcoming sequels, are overseeing the production.  The book will be available on Tuesday January 26, 2021 at http://legendofhalloween.com.

Originally premiered in the fall of 1978, Halloween inspired a generation of innovative horror films and a slew of franchise sequels and reboots. The Legend of Halloween follows the iconic villain Michael Myers as he wreaks havoc on his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, on Halloween night. Laurie Strode, originally portrayed by actress Jamie Lee Curtis, falls victim to the escaped killer, but manages to fight for her life and confront her new foe along the way.

Through eerie rhymes and quirky illustrations emulating the unsettling nature of the classic horror journey, Green and Tukel craft a reimagined telling of the beloved source material for longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.

“Joining this iconic franchise has been one of the most fulfilling artistic endeavors of my career,” says David Gordon Green. “With this new chapter, we hope to share our own love for Halloween with a new generation of horror fanatics.”

“I saw the original Halloween when I was about nine years old and it scared the wits out of me. I’ve seen it about fifty times since then and it continues to be my favorite horror film. The mask, the music, the indelible characters, the monologues of pure evil – to me it’s cinematic perfection,” said Onur Tukel. “Collaborating with David on a children’s book adaptation of Halloween has been demented and surreal, kind of like being simultaneously possessed by Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein and the demon Pazuzu.”

“The Legend of Halloween is a fun take on what has now become one of the most iconic films in cinematic history, John Carpenter’s Halloween,” says Malek Akkad, President of Trancas International Films which has produced Halloween (2018) and the upcoming Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. “The fans of these films have always been the driving force of the franchise, and I hope that they will appreciate this new book as much I do. It is fun for all generations of Halloween fans, young and old.”

“We are so excited to bring our new book to Halloween fans, both new and old,” says Ryan Freimann, SVP of Trancas International Films. “The story of Michael Myers is one that continues to haunt fans worldwide across multiple generations, and The Legend of Halloween is no exception.”

Total Film Debuts Exclusive Image of Michael Myers from the Upcoming Halloween Kills

January 6, 2021 by Sean Decker

Total Film released today an exclusive image of iconic slasher Michael Myers from the upcoming feature film Halloween Kills, set for release by Universal Pictures on October 15, 2021. Check it out below, as well as comments from director David Gordon Green on what audiences can expect of his follow-up to the 2018 smash hit, Halloween.

“It’s about the creation of fear,” director David Gordon Green says of the Halloween Kills, which brings back not only Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis’ “final girl” Laurie Strode but also several other characters from the 1978 John Carpenter horror classic.

“It’s one thing to be afraid of the Boogeyman,” extrapolated Green, “to have someone who might be in the closet, under the bed, creeping around your house. But we wanted to explore next was confusion, misinformation, and paranoia. What happens when fear goes viral? You can’t just stick your head under the covers anymore.”

“When we made the last one we wanted to find a way for someone who’s never seen the original to get up to speed with the story,” Green concluded. “But this one gets right to the action. It’s very aggressive. It’s more efficient. We wanted it to be an explosive middle before things get streamlined and personal again (with Halloween Ends).”

For more on Halloween Kills – and a preview of all the biggest movies heading your way in 2021 – pick up a copy of the new issue of Total Film Magazine when it hits shelves (real and digital) this Friday, January 8.

A direct sequel to director David Gordon Green’s global 2018 smash hit Halloween, Halloween Kills is directed by Green from a script he co-wrote with returning collaborator Danny McBride and series newcomer Scott Teems.

Returning to reprise her role of final girl “Laurie Strode” which she originated in John Carpenter’s immortal classic 1978 film Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis is joined by original cast members Nick Castle, Kyle Richards, Nancy Stephens and Charles Cyphers. Additional cast includes James Jude Courtney, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Robert Longstreet and Anthony Michael Hall.

What do we know? A lot, but first here are teasers of Halloween Kills, as well as a sneak peek courtesy of scream queen Jamie Lee, who took to Twitter on Halloween of 2019 to offer up the first footage from Halloween Kills. Check both out below, as well as the two films original announcement!

Wanna’ Own Michael Myers’ Home? It’s for Sale!

December 9, 2020 by Sean Decker

Well, at least the house which served as Michael’s childhood residence in 1989’s Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is, and it’s on the market now.

Located at 1007 E 1st Avenue in Salt Lake City, Utah, the now quite colorful 10-bedroom Victorian estate, which featured prominently in the third act finale of director Dominque Othenin-Girard’s Halloween 5, is currently available for $950,000.00.

According to the real estate listing, the “estate is one of the Avenues’ historic masterpieces. It was designed by renowned architect Frederick Albert Hale, who also designed the original Salt Lake City Public Library as well as the Alta Club, the Eagles Club, and other iconic private and public structures. It served as a residence for several notable families before it was converted to apartments in the mid-1900s. Since that time, it has functioned as a triplex, four-plex, five-plex, and a single-family home. It has ten bedrooms, five bathrooms, four kitchens, several living areas with two fireplaces, as well as a formal dining room and entryway.”

Interesting that the listing makes no mention of the house having stood as the home of horror cinema’s most iconic slasher.

December 7, 2020 by Sean Decker

Halloween series star Jamie Lee Curtis won the award for “Greatest Scream Queen of All Time” last night at the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time special, which paid tribute to the most memorable of celebrities in various entertainment categories.

Curtis, who originated the role of final girl “Laurie Strode” in John Carpenter’s immortal classic Halloween (1978) and who has gone on to reprise the role in four follow-ups, as well as in next year’s Halloween Kills and 2022’s Halloween Ends, was on hand to accept the award, presented to her by Scream series star Neve Campbell. Lee’s Halloween nemesis Michael Myers also made an appearance.

“For me, the greatest partnership and the only reason I’m standing here today, is my partnership with Michael, so I’d like to bring him out. Don’t be scared, they love you,” Curtis said in the segment, encouraging the iconic villain to step out from behind a tree. “Everybody, Michael Myers, my friend and often foe. Don’t worry, we both had COVID tests and he’s wearing a mask. The greatest mask ever.”

Jamie Lee Curtis Honored the Dying Wish of a Halloween Fan

November 19, 2020 by Sean Decker

On yesterday’s episode of the “The Talk,” Halloween series star Jamie Lee Curtis revealed that she officiated the wedding ceremony of Halloween fan Anthony Woodle, who succumbed to cancer earlier this year.

Woodle, a longtime fan of the Halloween film series, worked at a movie theater in Charleston, South Carolina, which had reached out to Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green, to tell him of Woodle’s plight.

“They said that a young man who works there named Anthony Woodle, very young and beautiful guy, was diagnosed with cancer and didn’t have long to live,” Curtis said on “The Talk.” “And so, David showed him a movie that no one in the world has seen, he showed Anthony and his fiancée Emilee the chance to see Halloween Kills, which I thought was just a beautiful gesture. And I simply followed it up by calling Anthony and sort of starting a conversation to say I could tell him any secret.”

Over the course of that conversation, Curtis decided to marry Anthony and his fiancée.

“It turned out that I also offered to marry him, because I am an officiant,” explained Curtis. “And it turned out that his wedding wasn’t gonna’ be able to happen because he was so near death,” she said.

Performed over Zoom, Curtis officiated the ceremony as Woodle and Emilee’s family and friends gathered. Curtis said that Woodle died approximately an hour after the wedding.

“It turned out to be something obviously incredibly moving and also very life affirming,” Curtis wept. “He was the greatest Halloween fan in the world, and I know a lot of them.”

In October, Curtis honored Woodle on her Instagram after his death.
