For years the only way you could watch the producers cut was via poorly made VHS/DVD versions of the film. Thankfully in 2014, Anchor Bay and Shout Factory put together the Limited Edition Halloween Complete Collection which included an all new remastered version of the Producers Cut on Blu-Ray and more recently Lionsgate has released a standalone version as well. You can purchase that version on Amazon.com HERE
In this release there are many things different from the theatrical version of the film, including a different score. In the Producers Cut, the music is more in line with Carpenter’s original Halloween and some of those themes are used in this film and played on piano/synthesizer, not guitar. Also there is much more screen time w/ Donald Pleasence and a completely different ending.
- There are no flashy montages with music cues used in the film. Donald Pleasence does the voice over during the opening credits instead of Paul Rudd.
- During the scene w/ Danny and Kara (right after Danny sees the man in black in his room) Kara reassures Danny that there are no monsters there. As she undresses in her room, more callers can be heard on Barry Simms show. This is also the case when we first see Dr. Loomis. There is an extended shot w/ Loomis typing and two additional callers commenting on Halloween in Haddonfield. There is also extended dialogue between Wynn and Loomis as he enters Loomis’ home and as they sit down for a drink.
- One of the most notable changes from the theatrical version was Jamie doesn’t die until much later in the film. Instead of impaling her on the farm equipment, Myers simply stabs her in the stomach and leaves her there to die.
- The next morning there is an extended scene w/ addition dialogue between Dr. Loomis and Wynn at Smith’s Grove before they enter Wynn’ office and find about Jamie being stabbed.
- Later that day, there is a deleted scene with Danny and Tim Strode. Tim is making the ‘famous’ stomach pounder while speaking on the phone w/ a friend using every single 90’s rap/hip-hop cliché imaginable. Later in that scene, right after John smacks Kara, the man in black’s voice can be heard saying “Danny Kill for Him” as Myers watches thru the window.
- As Loomis and Wynn arrive at the barn, we learn that Jamie is still alive and there is dialogue between them and the police about Myers return.
- After Kara, Tim and Beth arrive at school there is a scene w/ Kara walking to class and Myers stalking her.
- When Loomis meets with Debra at the Myers House, there is extended dialogue from Loomis about his past and he reveals that Jamie was found and we see her in the hospital having the knife removed from her stomach.
- Later as Tommy and Kara are in his room, it cuts to the Jamie in the hospital lying in bed unconscious. There are flashbacks of what happened to her while she was captive. The man in black enters her room and tells her that “Her work is done” and shoots her in the head.
- As we cut back to Tommy and Kara there is more focus on the runes, which are more prominent in this version of the film.
- John Strode’ death is more simple in this version. Instead of having his head blown up, he his simply impaled to the electrical box and dies.
- Right before Barry enters the van, we see Smith’s Grove Warren Country Sanitarium on the side as he’s being killed there is an overhead panning shot of them in the van.
- The ending is where things are completely different. Instead of Kara being captured and thrown in a cell, she is part of a sacrificial ritual where Myers power will be transferred over to her son Danny. Tommy and Loomis arrive at Smith’s Grove and Tommy steals a disguise to infiltrate the ceremony unnoticed. Meanwhile there is additional dialogue between Loomis and Wynn at his office that is more in line with what is about to take place and Loomis’ role moving forward. Wynn is wearing his ceremonial outfit during the conversation.
- Tommy manages to get Kara and Danny free, w/ Myers pursuing. Instead of drugging and beating Myers with a pipe, Tommy stops him using the power of the runes and they escape with Loomis. Wynn arrives just as leaves and watches as Myers stands motionless.
- As Loomis goes back inside the Sanitarium to check on Myers, he finds Wynn instead (dressed as Myers) knocked out on the floor. Wynn grabs Loomis’ hand and says “it’s your game now” and the thorn symbol now appears on Loomis’ arm. We then see a silhouette of Myers walking away and that’s when Loomis screams.
In additional to the deleted footage from the Producers Cut, there is also other footage that was deleted from the theatrical version of the film as well in order to appease the ratings board. All this footage can be found on the Producers Cut disc from Halloween The Complete Collection Limited Edition 15 Disc set. (CLICK TO PURCHASE)
- There is a different opening with Paul Rudd doing the monologue with additional/ new dialogue while the camera slowly pans around a nurse taking care of Jamie’s baby w/ thorn on his chest.
- There is more gore included in the scene when Jamie is impaled on the farm equipment.
- There is additional dialogue between Loomis and Wynn at Smith’s Grove near the end of the film.
- During the scene where Tommy, Kara and Danny are watching Myers kill the hospital staff, there is much more gore and prolonged shots of the staff being killed and after they are dead. Also included is the scene where Myers pushes the orderly’s face thru the bars while chasing them.
- Finally, in the scene where Tommy, Kara and Danny lock themselves in room w/ the all the experimental props etc., there is more shoots of the babies in the jars and Kara says the word “babies” as she looks at them.
