John Carpenter’s Halloween Returns to Theaters This Fall!

This fall, John Carpenter’s classic Halloween, the film that started it all, returns to theaters for a limited run, courtesy of Trancas International Films and Compass International Pictures and partner CineLife Entertainment.

 

Scheduled to run from September 27th to October 31st, the restored and remastered digital print was created under the supervision of the world-renowned cinematographer Dean Cundey, and marks the 41st anniversary of the groundbreaking film. In it, protagonist Michael Myers, who has spent the past fifteen years locked away inside a sanitarium for the childhood murder of his sister escapes, and on October 30th of 1978 makes his way back home to Haddonfield, Illinois, turning a night of tricks and treats into something much more sinister for three young women, including Laurie Strode, the star-making role for lead Jamie Lee Curtis.

LOCAL BOOGEYMAN Releases Officially Licensed Halloween Tees!

Owned and operated by clothing designer and horror fanatic James Claeys, Los Angeles’ LOCAL BOOGEYMAN’S House of Horror (located at 2151 West Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park) has been a horrifically cool and decidedly punk rock destination for horror fans since it opened its doors – and now they’re offering Officially Licensed Halloween apparel.

Founded by Claeys, LOCAL BOOGEYMAN has built a solid reputation for itself in the world of high-end tees and horror apparel. Pre-shrunk and made of vintage inspired and distressed material for an impressive fit and feel (I’ll personally attest to this, as my closet contains a half dozen or so), BOOGEYMAN apparel also features some truly unique graphic designs from horror films both young and old. Need some swag from the yet-to-be-released Rob Zombie flick 3 From Hell? Well, they’ve got it, but what’s got us even more excited is their latest release: a trio of tees inspired by John Carpenter’s 1978 classic, Halloween.

Halloween Kills & Halloween Ends Coming 2020 & 2021

The net’s been buzzing for months with speculation and rumor surrounding the potential continuation of the Halloween franchise, which was given new life last October via director David Gordon Green’s smash hit feature Halloween, a film which went on to make over $250 million worldwide at the box office.

Well, today the wait is over, as Universal Pictures has announced release dates for two new feature films in the iconic franchise from Trancas International Films, Miramax and Blumhouse Productions: Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

The first, titled Halloween Kills, is set for theatrical release on Friday, October 16th, 2020, with Green returning to direct from a script he co-wrote with returning collaborator Danny McBride and newcomer Scott Teems.

The second, Halloween Ends, intended as the finale of the saga, will be released on Friday, October 15th, 2021. Green will direct as well, from a script he co-wrote with McBride and writers new to the series, Paul Brad Logan and Chris Bernier.

Based on characters created by series originator John Carpenter and Debra Hills, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends will be produced by Malek Akkad, Jason Blum and Bill Block. Green, McBride, Carpenter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jeanette Volturno, Couper Samuelson and Ryan Freimann will serve as executive producers, with Ryan Turek overseeing both projects for Blumhouse.

The announcement comes on the birthday of late Halloween series producer Moustapha Akkad, of who his son Malek Akkad says, “No one would be more happy or more proud than my father, to see Halloween continue to resonate with fans all over the world.”

John Carpenter Talks Surviving Hollywood

Filmmaker and master of horror John Carpenter sat down with Variety’s Jenelle Riley for an interview recently to discuss his career, and touched on such topics as the films which frightened him as a boy (1958’s The Fly and 1951’s The Thing from Another World, among them), growing up in a segregated South, his early years at USC, his approach to scoring film, and Jason Blum’s challenge to him of, “Why don’t you get off your lazy butt and make it good instead of sitting around and complaining?” as it pertained to the Halloween film series, which prompted his return as executive producer and composer in last year’s David Gordon Green-directed box office hit.

It’s a great watch (and if you pay close attention, you’ll even spy in the b-roll a Rick Baker-designed maquette of a Creature from the Black Lagoon suit mock-up, which was intended for a never-made remake of the eponymous 1954 film which Carpenter was once attached to direct for Universal).

“She’s” Purely and Simply Evil?

Over the years, there’s been some rather interesting visual incarnations of Haddonfield’s favorite boogeyman (KNB’s Myers mask for Halloween H20 being one of them), but Kotobukiya’s Officially Licensed Female Michael Myers Bishouja Statue arguably is the most unusual!

Kotobukiya says of their 1:7 scale feminine twist on The Shape, which joins their Horror Bishouja line-up (they’ve previously released their own riffs on Pinhead, Jason Voorhees, Bride of Chucky and more): “The villainous killer is expertly transformed into the BISHOUJO style by talented illustrator Shunya Yamashita. The simple design of the mechanic’s uniform show off the BISHOUJO’s curves, and the details of her unique base evoke the atmosphere of the film. Writer Dennis Etchison Passes Away at Age 76

It’s with a heavy heart that we report the passing of writer Dennis Etchison.

A major contributor and editor of horror fiction, Etchison’s work is most known to Halloween fans via his novelizations of several genre films, the first being John Carpenter’s classic The Fog, under the pseudonym “Jack Martin,” with novelizations of both Halloween II and Halloween III to follow (under the same nom de plume).

Born March 30th, 1943 in Stockton, CA, Dennis William Etchison showed an early interest in writing literary fiction. As a teenager his first published story, “Odd Boy Out,” appeared in the gentlemen’s magazine Escapade, and emboldened he continued, attending UCLA film school in the 1960s (where he would later teach classes on creative writing) before becoming a full-time writer in the 1970s.

Etchison’s work went on to include the original novels Darkside (1986), Shadowman (1993), California Gothic (1995) and Double Edge (1996), as well as several well-regarded horror anthologies, including Cutting Edge (1986), a trio of volumes of the Masters of Darkness books, and the award-winning tomes MetaHorror in 1992 and The Museum of Horrors in 2001, among many others. Elected president of the Horror Writer’s Association from 1992-94 and the recipient of the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2017, Etchison was proclaimed by author Stephen King as, “one hell of a fiction writer,” as well as, “the finest writer of psychological horror this genre has ever produced,” by Karl Edward Wagner.

In addition to his considerable talent for literary fiction, Etchison’s elephantine knowledge of film was also brought to light in King’s non-fiction 1981 book on the horror genre Danse Macabre, on which Etchison served as a historian and consultant. Other efforts within television and film included a gig as a staff writer on the HBO series The Hitchhiker (1983-87), as well as having co-written with John Carpenter an unproduced script for Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers in 1986.

HalloweenMovies.com to Live Stream this Saturday’s Halloween Panel at Monsterpalooza

Monsterpalooza, the world’s longest running celebration of the art of monsters and movie magic, (running this year April 12-14 at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, CA) is set to host a panel this coming Saturday on the continued exploits of Haddonfield’s most infamous resident, Michael Myers, and HalloweenMovies.com is set to live stream it.

Running from 1:15 to 2:00 PM PST, the panel, moderated by Fangoria’s editor emiritus Tony Timpone, will feature Halloween 2018’s makeup effects designer Christopher Nelson, actress Rhian Rees (the film’s “Dana Haines”) and The Shape himself, actor and stuntman James Jude Courtney, as they reminisce about the making of the highest grossing slasher film of all time.

Tickets are available at the door for $35 each with the convention kicking off at 11 AM, and we encourage those attending to arrive early (if past years are any indication, the show will sell out). John Carpenter to Receive the Prestigious Golden Coach Award at Cannes Director’s Fortnight

According to Variety, Halloween director and horror master John Carpenter is set to receive the 2019 Golden Coach Award (Carrosse d’Or) at the Director’s Fortnight sidebar of the Cannes Film Festival on May 15th.

In its letter to Carpenter, The French Directors’ Guild, which chooses the recipient of the award, called the filmmaker “a creative genius of raw, fantastic and spectacular emotions,” and when on to say that each of his films “enhances the irresistible delight of staging. In each of them, the work on space, on what is off-screen, on the visible and on the invisible, is constantly renewed and regenerated in order to redefine fear – a fear that is always prone to trigger emotions in characters and actors who have now become iconic.”

Past recipients of the award include Martin Scorsese in 2018 and Werner Herzog in 2017.
